Before working at ISG I had become very depressed and, as a result of shutting myself away, developed social anxiety.
I had to leave my job due to this and started to go to the job centre who recommended I attend an organisation called Aspire-I.
This helped me to get used to being around people a bit more and communicating again rather than shutting myself away and making things worse.
After that I moved to Work Able – part of the Skills for Work team at Bradford Council – who helped me to build a CV and develop my employability. After spending a bit of time there I was able to get a placement working at ISG on a year’s supported employment contract with the hope that I could find full time employment within or upon completion of the contract. I further developed my social skills working as part of a friendly and patient team whilst also learning new skills in the manufacturing of UPVC windows and doors. As my skills grew, my confidence was greatly increased and I started to feel more like my old self again. My depression decreased and I was able to stop the medication I was taking to reduce the effects.
When my contract was close to completion I was able to apply for a position that had opened up at the company to be kept on full time, I received help with my interviewing skills and preparation which were severely lacking which helped me to be successful in getting the job.
I continued to learn and build my confidence whilst passing on the knowledge I had acquired to people who came on the work choice placements, as I had done. Three years later, and the skills and confidence I have improved, have helped me to be successful in applying for a job opportunity with a security solutions business.
I will be forever indebted to the people at Aspire-I, Work Able and all the staff at ISG who had the patience to help me get to where I am now, everyone on the shop floor and everyone at ISG who has helped to teach me and helped me grow as a person. When I look back at how I used to be I can’t quite believe how far I have come and I hope I can continue to grow as a person and do everyone proud. I will be very sad to leave but at the same time I am excited for my future prospects.
